چکیده
Abstract The physical processes driving the genesis of surface- and subsurface-intensified cyclonic anticyclonic eddies originating from coastal current system Mauritanian upwelling region are investigated using a high-resolution (∼1.5 km) configuration GFDL’s Modular Ocean Model. Estimating an energy budget for boundary reveals baroclinically unstable state during its intensification phase in boreal summer which is eddy generation within near-coastal region. mean poleward flow’s interaction with sloping topography induces enhanced vorticity, potential vorticity close to zero generated bottom layer. Flow separation at sharp topographic bends intensifies submesoscale structures low PV coalesce form vortices. A combination offshore Ekman transport horizontal advection determined amount South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) eddy. vortex relatively dense core will mode water eddy, subduct along isopycnals while propagating hence be shielded surface buoyancy forcing. Less contribution SACW promotes as composed lighter mass, causes stay closer exposed Simulated formed between rotational flow flowing current, being dominant source kinetic energy. All three types play key role exchange currents adjacent eastern shadow zone

Phytoplankton primary productivity in the Santa BarbaraChannel: Effects of wind-driven upwelling and mesoscale eddies
[1] The patterns and drivers of phytoplankton primary productivity in the Santa Barbara Channel (SBC) were examined on 16 cruises conducted 3 times each year from 2001 to 2006. Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis revealed 3 modes of variability that explained 89% of the variance in the productivity data set. The first mode, strongest during spring, describes seasonal productivity chang...

15 صفحه اولAn avenue of eddies: Quantifying the biophysical properties of mesoscale eddies in the Tasman Sea
[1] The Tasman Sea is unique characterised by a strong seasonal western boundary current that breaks down into a complicated field of mesoscale eddies almost immediately after separating from the coast. Through a 16-year analysis of Tasman Sea eddies, we identify a region along the southeast Australian coast which we name ‘Eddy Avenue’ where eddies have higher sea level anomalies, faster rotati...
متن کاملObserved 3D Structure, Generation, and Dissipation of Oceanic Mesoscale Eddies in the South China Sea
Oceanic mesoscale eddies with horizontal scales of 50-300 km are the most energetic form of flows in the ocean. They are the oceanic analogues of atmospheric storms and are effective transporters of heat, nutrients, dissolved carbon, and other biochemical materials in the ocean. Although oceanic eddies have been ubiquitously observed in the world oceans since 1960s, our understanding of their t...
